Created in 1990 by a group of surfers who wanted to defend their playground, Surfrider Europe has in its blood the social mobilization for the protection of the ocean and the coastline. Surfrider Foundation Europe is a non-profit organisation that is responsible for the protection and development of lakes, rivers, the ocean, waves and coastlines. It currently has over 13,000 members and operates in 11 countries through its volunteer branches.

Surfrider Foundation Europe is active in three specific areas in which the organisation has acquired recognized expertise over almost 30 years: water waste, water quality and health of users, coastal development and climate change.
